This project involved the refurbishment of a Grade II Listed medieval hall - the living quarters of a former Dartmoor longhouse. The house is one of three longhouses that form a tiny hamlet near Moretonhampstead.

The house had belonged to The Landmark Trust who bought the farm in the 1970’s and restored the farmhouse and carried out vital repairs to preserve the medieval hall, including retaining the remnants of smoke blackened thatching battens and roof trusses.

However, when our clients bought the property from the Landmark Trust in 2014 the hall was unfortunately no longer fit for habituation.

The refurbishment was a fascinating project. Our clients wished to restore the kitchen and dining area to the hall and create a new bathroom and guest bedroom above. Specialist materials were used to create a new dry floor and the walls were lime-rendered and finished with lime-wash.

The existing narrow and rather dangerous Victorian staircase was replaced by a small oak staircase that created a much safer journey to the first floor. All the remaining roof structure was retained and the new white painted ceiling behind has provided a perfect backdrop to these ancient links with the past.
