A new detached house of approximately 280m2 (3,000sqft) built to a bespoke design for our clients, on a gently sloping greenfield site overlooking the church.

Lower Barton was conceived as a split-level reverse-living house, with all the reception rooms on the upper floor in order to capitalise on the lovely outlook and utilise the vaulted ceilings to add volume and drama to the spaces.

The accommodation included four large bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an integral double garage with gymnasium over. Materials and finishes were to a high specification, and included natural stone and slate externally, green oak framing and trusses, a bespoke fitted kitchen and underfloor heating throughout. A premium Austrian bio-mass boiler and pellet silo was installed in a dedicated plant room under the house.

"They say buying a house is one of the most stressful things you can do so it is fair to say that building your own could potentially be one step worse. However, having met with Gordon of Scarratt and Martyn and having interviewed a number of architects we felt that he was not only professional but also clear in his approach, open and honest about his charges, gave examples of prior work and listened intently to what we wanted. This substantive difference in style to others has meant that our project completed not only with our dream home being built but also on budget and within very acceptable timeframes.

From submitting the planning application, preparing tender documentation to helping to select the builders and then overseeing their work we have been absolutely in awe of the service that Scarratt & Martyn offer their clients. Gordon’s passion during the design phase and enthusiasm for his work meant that we have ended up with a home that we could only have dreamed of at the start. Their knowledge of all aspects of a project is absolutely fantastic and really made the difference in our build.

We are so grateful to Scarratt & Martyn and in particular Gordon for all they’ve done for us and would implore anyone looking to complete a self build to consider them as part of your project, not just in the design phase but in all stages of the work. We are now enjoying our forever home and remain indebted to Gordon for his hard work, expertise and patience."
