One half of a pair of cottages situated on the riverside in Calstock within the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Our clients loved their diminutive home with its period features and high ceilings, but desperately needed more space. Together we developed a design for a bold contemporary single-storey extension to provide a new sitting room and additional bedroom.
Black-stained boarding was chosen to finish the external walls, heightening the contrast between old and new, whilst harking-back to the architecture of the wharves and boatsheds once found along the quayside.
The new flat roof doubles as a secret garden terrace, accessible from the existing first floor bedrooms. Here, the timber clad walls provide complete privacy whilst the elevated vantage point provides new views to the river, uninterrupted by the boats on the quayside opposite.
